The engines in this boat are original equipment 6 cylinder flat head Hercules purchased from Chris-Craft for Stephens Bros in 1956. They have not been rebuilt. One is strong and runs fine while the other has some overheating problems. The owners are having it professionaly evaluated to determine the cause and fix. At this time we have to assume this engine will need some repair and therefore can be considered in negotiations. There are no hour meters. Horsepower on these engines is reported to be anywhere from 120 to 145 depending on which resource is accessed.
The boat has two 12 volt batteries (one for each engine as a starting battery) and four 6 volt batteries in the house bank.
Although the flybridge controls are all in place and look reasonably sound, the transmission shifting levers don't function from that location as they are push button electric from the main helm. These could be repaired, or the flybridge could be used for outdoor seating in port instead of for boat operation underway.

Throughout the long history of boats, there have been hardley any prettier than this one, however; the old girl's heart is broken! Actually, that is the port side heart. The port engine has been given the death nod by a marine mechanic. Seals need replacing and they may not be available from Hurcules any more. He suggested replacing this engine and the owner says, "I can't do that. Bring on the offers"!
A great deal of work was done on this lovely boat in 1998-2000 including propane cabin heat, galley stove, fridge, head and holding tank, countertops, upholstery and exterior work. In 2005 her bottom was refastened and some sistering to the bones done. Varnish and metal polish are the main items that need done today plus a decision on how to deal with the one tired engine. eBay had one of these engines for sale a while back for around $700 plus shipping from somewhere around the great lakes.
If you are a classic wooden boat enthusiast with mechanical aptitude this beautiful Stephens yacht could be your next love. The boat has not seen much in the way of maintenance in the last year and a half but her hull, house and interior appear to just need some elbow grease to bring her beauty back.
The Tacoma Narrows Marina boathouse this Stephens is moored in is also for sale.
